With Southern and Native American roots, Carter was reared with a deep respect for storytelling. After a childhood steeped in story and character, Carter attended Duke University where she majored in English Literature. Following a brief stint as a children’s librarian, she enrolled in Columbia University’s School of the Arts, where she earned an MFA in Film with a focus in Screenwriting.

Since moving to Los Angeles, Carter has written for major studios and networks, selling original pitches and working on assignment. She brings her screenwriting experience to Wise World Prep, where she casts each student as the protagonist of his or her own Personal Statement. Carter shares classic storytelling strategies in order to heighten the drama (or the comedy!) and make each essay as entertaining as it is informative. She aims to emotionally engage the reader, ensuring that each student makes a memorable impression during the admissions process.

More than just a writing instructor, Carter’s sense of humor, optimism, and patience enable her to provide much needed emotional support. She understands that college essays are more challenging than they seem…Writing about oneself is difficult, writing about oneself in less than 650 words is even harder, and writing about oneself when it feels like your future is on the line often seems impossible. Carter specializes in breaking down the process into easily accomplishable tasks, then cheering on the student each step of the way.

Mari considers herself a Southern California native despite having lived in a number of places including Chicago, Australia, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, and Samoa (to name a few). She graduated from Dartmouth with a B.A. in English Literature and Psychology in 2003. She also holds a M.S. in Elementary Education and is ABD (all but dissertation) in an Ed.D. program in Organizational Leadership at Pepperdine’s Graduate School of Education and Psychology.

When she’s not working as a Peace Corps Volunteer, turning around under-performing school districts, or helping students pursue their college dreams, she’s likely up in the mountains somewhere running an ultramarathon, camping with her kids out in the wilderness, or concocting a new and creative gourmet experiment in her kitchen.
